The Psychology department is really lovely, full of top class academics, most staff I've come into contact with are helpful and friendly. Cohorts aren't huge (at least not in my year) so there are the resources to support basically designing your own third year project if you can locate a member of staff who specialises in the area of research you're interested in (you would think that all Uni's do this, but I know for a fact from Psychology friends at other Russell Groups have had to go through the woeful experience of being allocated a third year project which they hate). Durham itself is a gorgeous city - it's not exactly a party town but I think it is what you make it. There is an overwhelming amount of posh people, however, enough from different backgrounds for you to find your niche if you persevere and make the effort to meet different people and join societies. Overall, I have loved my Durham experience, and I'll be gutted to leave! read more

There is a very ineteresting, broad content and a wide range of modules and assignments so everyone will find something for themsleves, however it is not as chalenging as I expected and there aren't enough opportunities to get involved with the department and not enough discussions, which I find to be most enriching. read more

Quirky lecturers, course mates with diverse characters, cardiac hill, a sandwich van, 3 hours practical classes, all good memories. One of the memorable incidents happened during a revision class in the 2nd year. Students were waiting for a lecturer to come, and he came in 40 minutes late. By that time, about the half of the students had left the lecture theatre as they wanted to do revision for the exam. The lecturer wondered in, saying nothing, but wrote on the blackboard "infantile death", then left. read more

I like the course structure - a large variety of topics are covered, allowing you to find what interests you the most. The lecturers are mostly great and always knowledgeable about their subject. What I love most is the level of engagement with current research. The tutors discuss their own research and there are opportunities for students to get involved as well and assist in research projects. I believe the department genuinely cares about the students, the only occasional problems are with communication. For example, the department hosts psychology-related talks every week, which would be interesting to many students, but those are rarely advertised to undergraduates. I went my whole first year without knowing about many interesting opportunities. read more

Don't get me wrong, I loved my time at Durham. However, the course was pretty poor. No seminars, 100% lectures. Unhelpful tutors, no personal tutor in department, only in college and they had no background in Psychology. Feedback on summatives and formatives was poor across the board. Lecturers are researchers primarily which is great because they know their stuff but it also means they travel a lot and miss lectures. Can feel like poor value for money and that you are only their secondary interest. I totally understand you cannot be babied, but I at least hope to be treated like a customer to some extent, parting with a huge amount of money to be taught interesting and useful information and assisted with content when teaching myself from books. Essentially, I felt pretty cheated. I really enjoyed my elective modules, their content was really interesting (I chose cybercrime, English and education across the course) and it was nice to see how other departments worked (seminars!) read more
