I actually did childhood and youth studies with criminology - this wasn’t an option here to select. I adore the course, although, I’ve never seen nor been contacted by my personal tutor. read more

The course is a sham, no accreditation from either the psychology side and no prospects going forward with working with children without further completing a masters. read more

For someone wanting to go into counselling/clinical psychology field, there is no option to do a dissertation in psychology, it has to be in education as a major, which makes no sense as you will neither be qualified as teacher status nor will you be able to get on the bps accredited degree. However, Southampton University does the same course and there is a choice for this to happen and you do get teacher status or accredited BPS - I have no idea why Portsmouth University does not follow this same structure, the lectures for Childhood and Youth are mundane and could be read from home, on Moodle! There should be more options with psychology, for those that do not want to go into teaching! One final point, attendance and going to allocated lectures/seminars is a major priority for the course leaders, and admin, which is a waste of our time and money, at this level, if students make a decision to either jump in on a lecture/seminar not on their allocated timetable - so what? read more

The course is brilliant with a range of content, however certain lecturers tend to only focus on their own research rather than exploring other arguments. Also some tutors are really good while others don’t seem to care as much. There is a load of support available from a range of people and loads of people in the department willing to help you with whatever you need. All are specialised in different subjects and are happy for you to contact them or see them in their office hours. A load of trips are available, I went to Chimfunshi wildlife orphanage in Zambia for 2 weeks which was amazing. Also the course is made up of coursework and exams so caters for everyone and they’re willing to adjust your assessments if needs must (I.e. a friend with anxiety was allowed to write 3 short essays rather than complete 18 pieces of research for dissertation students in her first year). read more

Sociology with Psychology, BSc Hons FullTime
The course is great though it could do much better on topics. In my opinion the seminars should be more focused on teaching rather than making us talk to each other. It makes me want to avoid seminars, even though I understand the reasoning behind it (Psychological course). Hopefully this only happens during the first year. There is a great range of topics. I have been interested in everything the lectures i attended taught. The teachers are great and the personal tutors listen to your issues; offer advice. The teaching in seminars and lectures is great, i like it. The teachers know how to spot your essay writing weaknesses and the feedback you will get will be spot-on on what to fix. read more

Value for money- was not great, there are hardly any seminars to practice what you have learnt for your exams so you have to put in all the work alone and there is not much room for getting feedback apart from the mocks you do half way through the year! Teaching Quality- This was average some lecturers could be amazing and very interesting whereas others would read off of the slides and drone on. Personal tutor- was really lovely and helpful getting me onto a new course at a different University. Course content- The same as the teaching quality about half the course was interesting and the other half was not worth listening to or very boring. Job Prospects- Looking at statistics for many places no one tends to go into Psychology but still the employment rate was quite low for this University for this course. read more
Sociology with Psychology, BSc Hons FullTime
Okay so they lie to you when they say these two courses merge together well, they don't. Psychology is absolutely separate to sociology and they do not tie in together. In the first year there are no seminars for the with psychology students and if you are doing sociology you will be used to doing loads of very interactive seminars, so it is very strange to go from that to sitting in silence for two hours twice a week being lectured at and then having no opportunity to discuss what you have learnt. Sociology side of this course is absolutely brilliant and I whole heartily recommend! read more
