Ancient History and History, BA Hons FullTime

I graduated with a 1st class degree this July and have gone on to do a MA. Honestly while the teaching is good for some subjects, you'll be in good hands if you like Late Antiquity, it's not worth the money. I essentially paid 27k for a library. I only had 5 hours contact time in my final year. The schools (this is a joint degree) also do not communicate. In my first year I had to attend every 'intro to the uni' session twice. This problem only got worse, with little knowledge of what we were doing in other lectures gaps were created and opportunities for better learning missed. Sometimes we were expected to know information from modules we did not take as AHH students. E.g. Ancient History and History students did not take 'Percieving the Past' however some HS lecturers would reference this module during teaching, leaving us confused. Worst of all this issue seems to be down to a petty rivalry between the schools. This really soured my experience of doing my degree.

Ancient History and Archaeology, BA Hons FullTime

I did the distance Ancient History and Archaeology course. The good is that the personal tutors are pretty great. The teachers are hit and miss, when they are good it's great, they email once a week, respond quickly, provide extra support, provide excellent feedback and follow up help on essays and make extra resources exp. videos, extra reading materials to support etc. When they are bad you will hear nothing from them week to week, take a long time to respond (10 days was the longest I had to wait, not great when the question was regarding an essay) and give basic feedback The actual course is basic, some of it is interesting but the course books are a simplified version of the additional reading. You can simply focus on the essays and forgo the course entirely and your learning won't change. The DL team are simply incompetent in every aspect. If you want decent learning don't do this course, if you want the piece of paper and don't mind casual incompetence, this course is ok. read more

An extensive range of subjects to focus on, and how the course is organised allows for you to gain interest in subjects that may have been unappealing prior to gaining a specialist's insight on the matter. Tutors are quick to respond with any queries, providing informative feedback and are happy to sort out a meeting should I request it. read more

On the whole the course is perfect for me. All the areas listed above are to an exceptional standard- it would be nice to see a bit more info on specific employability but we have begun to be dripfed info on this gradually throughout the year. My personal tutor has been very supportive and has been great this year. The content again is very enthralling and keeps me deeply interested read more

I only averaged around 9 contact hours per week, though this is apparently common for the course. All lecturers and staff were incredibly knowledgeable about their subject and a wide range of courses were offered. The Politics department also arranged for a number of interesting guest lecturers and speakers throughout the year, ranging from diplomats to terrorism experts. read more
