Most of the lecturers are brilliant (for ChemEng): they take their time to explain concepts well and are useful if you request for help within office hours. They do also make you aware of skills you will need to work on in order to actually succeed within industry. The student support for this course, however, is a complete joke; no-one is aware of policies and vital module information and there’s no place to find information regarding the course generally. This is one thing that need to be improved. Some of the module leaders do not respond to emails and there is a lack of structure in terms of timetabling. Communication between the hub and lecturers needs improving and general organisation e.g. classification policy, degree percentages, deadlines, academic calendars, mitigation ect. The tutors are not helpful and supervisors don’t care about students doing dissertations. If the above points could be improved it would be an excellent course. read more

The department need a lot of work, staff are sometimes unprofessional, unaware of dissertation information that is vital and some have questionable teaching methods and treatment of students. There is a huge lack in communication between departments and huns as well as departments and students. read more

Very poor department. Standard of lecturing varied wildly from absolutely excellent to extremely poor. Found it amazing that some modules averaged over 60 (with great teachers) to very high fail rates (due to useless teachers and extremely poor standard of notes) and no one picked up on it or cared. Very disorganised and lecturers/admin staff regularly ignore emails/problems. As an example, in my final year they calculated our final grade based upon a module being a 50/50 coursework and exam split, despite it actually being 80/20. When 20+ students angrily emailed asking why this happened, they apologised and changed the grade which actually changed my degree classification to a higher grade. Had we not been on the ball the uni simply would have let it slide because the lecturer who had done this had done it wrong then gone on a month long holiday. Go figure. read more

I wish there were more availability for placements and the tutors actually cared about improving the status of the university as opposed to doing it for the money. Also, it seems like the university don't care about their students aiming for firsts. Second class degrees seem adequate enough for student to achieve and it's really disheartening given better universities are higher ranked due to pushing their students and providing opportunities for growth. Waste of 9000 a year. read more

Graduated with a First. Had long hours from year 1. Other people studying English, Economics, had it easy with their hours. Yet with the degree was Ive picked up a 6 figure city job. The whole course is difficult, but Engineers can not only do the math, they can put things into action. So even if you don't end up an Engineer, the skill of intelligent problem solving and communication - puts you well ahead of the rest. read more
