Philosophy and Psychology, MA Hons FullTime

Doing this as a joint degree is a good option as the psychology component is accredited. Can be a lot of reading at times, and deadlines often clash between both courses (I had five assessments in under two weeks) but it pays off. Tutors for both courses are normally really great. I would say if you haven't studied a lot of philosophy in school/college it's a hard transition and the standard of essays is high but because of the feedback improvement comes easier. Only downside is the philosophy department participates in a lot more strikes than the psychology department. Psychology is truly stats heavy though, so if maths isn't a strong point it might be a bit more difficult to keep on top of it but some of the tutors are really great at making stats lectures engaging. Psychology stats tutorials are some of the most fun ones though (if you like data).

I love the content of my courses, they are always really informative and have some fun activities added in as well! Most of the teachers are enthusiastic about the subject which makes me even more intrigued to learn about the topics. I haven't spoken much to my personal tutor, but the very few times I have, he has been helpful and pointed me in the right direction. read more

Wish the counselling course was advertised better as it would allow me to leave uni with the qualifications I need to get into counselling. I was also unable to pick my courses for psychology, which really affected my drive and determination for my course as I wasn’t able to study the fields that interest me even through there run at the school. The sociology department has been amazing, but psychology should look into being more flexible and understanding towards their students . read more

Job prospects difficult if no paid work experience, however the School of Psychology are extremely helpful at providing research experience for students interested. They also provide great internship opportunities. Internships are organised by Dr Oliver Hamlet who has great communications via Email, along with Dr Amy Irwin 👍🏼. Professor Patric Bach (my personal tutor) and Professor Jason Bohan all have been great to deal with. Dr Mirjam Brady-Van den Bos Is a fantastic lecturer and class teacher. Dr Jacqui Hutchison, Dr Heather Branigan and Dr Clare Kirtley and Jason Bohan are all fantastic class teachers too. Professor Jie Sui (my dissertation supervisor) is also so lovely and helpful. The entire department is great and do their upmost to support students which is reassuring particularly in Psychology! Would fully recommend studying Psychology at University of Aberdeen. A big thank you to all 👍🏼🙏🏼 read more

Was supposed to have 2 personal tutors and 1 advisor of studies over a 2 year period, and they were each meant to see you 3-4 times a year. I saw one of them once, and they never replied to my emails, even when I was asking for advice due to wanting to transfer/ leave. According to one Dr, the staff despised having to do more work for no extra pay. No value for money. They spend your fees on sports equipment instead, most of the lecturers read from 10 year old power point presentations and called that teaching. read more
