French and International Relations, MA Hons FullTime

French and IR is interesting. I genuinely can’t complain about the Politics and IR staff (you have to do both in 1st and 2nd year), they make the course straightforward and guide you in the right direction. They are, for the most part, fair markers and tutors are happy to help you. French on the other hand is a tricky one. It’s pretty much expected that you take both the language and the culture course. There is a lot of coursework and tests, and they are incredibly harsh markers. It’s nothing like French at school (if you’re from Scotland at least). It’s also a small course so your tutors will likely get to know you and expect a lot from you which can be intimidating but it’s also a more personal learning experience in that sense as there isn’t that anonymity of a large cohort. Job prospects definitely depend on the course but I don’t think that’s any reflection on the university - most people know what they’re getting themselves in for when they choose.

I personally feel like lecturers spend a lot of time reading off the slides instead of adding any new information and the instructions on final assessments are very unclear. I wish they'd be more clear with how assignments will be graded. read more

Never heard from my personal tutor in first year when I arguble needed them the most. Also dont have to pay tuition because I am an EU student and started before Brexit, so value for money is excellent for me - wouldn't pay full tuition though but that's just because at home university is free. read more

I am really enjoying my degree programme. Certainly in later years of my course the teaching continues to improve. My personal tutor is fantastic and has been very supportive throughout my degree. Job prospects are broad which can be both a pro and a con. The degree can be applied to a vast range of careers but very few of them are directly applicable to what we learn during our time at university. However, for the most part, I can say my course is very enjoyable and well taught read more

With how everything has played out I definitely do not think we got our money’s worth. As an international students 15k a year is a lot and we need to be refunded. What I do outmost admire about my university is the services. I’ve never been able to get help the way that Aberdeen has given. AUSA really care about the quality of life of its students and I absolutely respect read more

You'll be bored out of your mind. The University has pretty much given-up on teaching. You'll have 6-8 hours of classes a WEEK and will, basically, have to teach yourself the whole course (especially if you study humanities or social sciences). However, the exams are so utterly basic that you would have to be an utter idiot to fail. Since uni is so easy and everyone pretty much graduates with a First or a 2.1, you'll be left with tons of free time to get drunk and to go out on a regular basis. It's only a pity that Aberdeen's nightlife is quite trashy and decadent. You'll get bored of it very quickly as well. read more
