East Asian Studies and History, BA Hons FullTime

Only a handful of the modules were accessible. One had contradictory guidelines for an assignment and when asked for guidance the lecturer couldn’t be bothered to reply then left feedback scolding me for not asking if I was unsure. Half of them don’t put the slides up afterwards to allow for more in depth note taking and there was really only two modules in which I felt the course was good quality and that I felt supported in my studies. read more

I love my degree but most of it is self study, and there are a lot of readings that are not mentioned in class. So you have to balance a lot at one time. read more

This is a course I am going to be studying next year, I could not find my current one in the drop down menu. I heard that the contents of the course are challenging because there are a lot of modules that I would need to take, but I am prepared to work hard to achieve a good balance. read more

This degree program is very specific and quite a peculiar combination. It doesn't suprise me that I was the only student in my cohort on this degree. When I apply for jobs in the future, my degree title will definitely intrigue some people and hopefully make me stand out a little?! read more

My review relates to the Japanese Studies MA, which is not listed. There are some passionate and truly brilliant specialists in the East Asia department at SOAS, but the giant hole in the finances shows in absolutely every part of the (extortionately priced) postgraduate experience. It's shameful. read more

My course is MA Japanese Studies but I can’t choose it in your system. More courses about Japanese modern or pop culture, and links between Japanese culture and globalisation can be provided. Not many job prospects regarding Japanese studies are provided, which needs improvement. Strikes happened a lot so sometimes the teaching quality is below my expectation. However, this is more about the policy, not the teachers. Also, markings should be done faster. read more

Japanese has been great. Super fast paced and a bit scary but I’ve really enjoyed it so far despite these difficulties. The teachers are really useful and supportive too. Linguistics has support when needed but can be more unsupportive at times, depending on the module. read more

East Asian Studies and International Relations, BA Hons FullTime

It is a really balanced course, which I strongly recommend to anyone interested in International Relations and the East Asian region. What I especially liked was the wide range of resources and the quality of teaching. If I had to point to one negative aspect of it, it would be the quite narrow narrative that is being taught. The 'SOAS Ideology' as I would refer to it, is present in the teachings of almost every module making it difficult to present alternative views on the issues we are covering. read more
