Is University Worth it? UK Graduate Outcomes 2023

Are you wondering if the cost of university in the UK will give a good return on your investment of time, money and commitment? For some, earning a high graduate income and having the best prospects upon graduation can justify the high cost and considerable time spent earning an undergraduate degree. Some students seek the cheapest accommodation, living costs and tuition fees in order to do a course they love. Not all young people are motivated by high earnings right after uni.

There is no one way to make this important decision. However, getting the most ‘bang for your buck’ is usually a big factor for most prospective students and their parents/carers.

This page showcases the percentage of graduates in work, graduate salaries, drop-out rates and the minimum cost of accommodation for each university in the UK.

We have included the cost of accommodation because it is the single largest cost variable in a student’s budget, with accommodation costs varying widely from institution to institution, and city to city. While tuition fees may be more expensive overall, they are static and are part of everyone’s budget so we focus here on the cost of accommodation.

Use our table below to help you decide the best university for graduate earnings and potential.

Of course, there are many ways to approach this decision. Information on salaries, percentages of graduates who get a job after uni and drop-out rates only give 3 measures. And we don’t have the breakdown by course so it will also vary.

We use these measures because they are easier to quantify and they are publicly available. Yet other measures are also important.

University is a time of intense self-development and learning and there is no way to easily measure the impact of this investment on an individual or their future achievements. Friends are often made for life as students are thrown together socially and academically through formative experiences.

So, consider this a starting point in your decision-making journey about whether university is right for you and, crucially, whether you can afford it.

Why are student drop-out rates important?

Student drop-out rates in the UK can be a good indicator of whether a university met expectations. However, there are many reasons why students drop out of their course. Examples include disliking their course, struggling to fit in socially or not enjoying the city.

You can use university drop out rates to indicate a level of student satisfaction. This may be key if you want to make the most of your time at university. We have included the percentage of students who dropped out of their university in the table below.

What does the average graduate salary tell you about the university?

The average starting salary for graduates can indicate both the success and reputation of alumni. Universities may also have a well-equipped careers service which enables students to succeed in applying for jobs with higher salaries. There are a number of factors which contribute to a high starting salary for graduates. These factors include industry links, educational history, previous work experience and individual economic background.

Where are these key UK graduate statistics from?

This data on graduate jobs and salaries is collected through the HESA Graduate Outcomes Survey. Students complete the survey 15 months after graduating. They answer questions on their current income and employment status. The survey is a key source of graduate statistics for higher education in the UK.

The data on accommodation is from our own live accommodation data. We have dug out the minimum price you might pay for accommodation at each university. A few caveats: we have selected the lowest prices for the 23/24 academic year which were available to book between November 2022 to August 2023.

Most prices increase year-on-year and some increase throughout the booking cycle as rooms are sold so cheaper rooms may be available to you if you book early. Consider this a guide price only. A small number of these listed prices may be for specific students, e.g. couples in postgraduate accommodation and therefore not available to undergraduate students.

We have taken the main campus location prices for each university so if you know you are planning to study at a different campus in a different city, then these prices may not be relevant. Up-to-date pricing info can be found on our website at all times - we always try to list the cheapest available room for each residence so you can be armed with the best information to make the right choice for you.

Use our A-Z table below to research UK universities graduate outcomes alongside the minimum cost of accommodation per person per week.

How on earth can you slate the facilities and societies when you have access to all that UCL has to offer, should you be willing to enquire? You also have a second campus in Stratford, should you live in east London. The course is catered for those with busy lives, and those looking to progress in their career. For this reason, Birkbeck has a huge advantage over other uni's for older students who are career orientated. Offering a wide range of degrees and expert knowledge from its staff, this will surely satisfy any prospective students wishing to embark on high class HE, just a short while from London without the extortionate cost of living within the capital. A great place to study also for international students, whose large amount every year helps both new internationals socialise with their compatriots to settle in, and existing students develop firm relationships with citizens from different geographical, cultural and linguistic backgrounds. “The campus is on two beautiful sites, with the Catalyst building you an study 24/7 securely with amazing facilities on site. The location is ideal for students who want to go into town or want to be in the countryside. There’s a mix of all ages and the most important thing is the support you will receive here. As a disabled student I thought I would fall behind but I needn’t have worried - I have ongoing support from my lecturers and the last two years feel like five minutes it’s gone so fast. I would do it all over again I enjoy the mix of lectures and workshops we have, and I love the wide open feeling of the Leek Road campus because it never feels like you are hemmed in.”

“Swansea University, was just the best place for me to be! Starting from awarding me a full tuition fee scholarship and other bursary they awarded everyone. These really helped a lot of us that ordinarily would have struggled to pay our fees. Swansea University Library was so supportive with resolving any internet issues, helping us with any query on referencing, downloading softwares, a safe space for us to study and all. I must also commend the Swansea University MyUnihub and Student support for the speed with which they respond to queries. The tutors are also very experienced and dedicated to making us improve and are also very supportive. I can remember using school Laptop from the library which really helped me alot. Also the Student Union government are on top of their game with the go global initiatives and I took part in so many trips and I really enjoyed the trip to Birmingham, the trip to Oxford. “UWTSD Lampeter: This charming university has picturesque surroundings. I was attracted by the tranquility of the mountains and countryside- a good place if you want peace and focus. There are a few societies and pubs nearby but it is not a 'party scene'. The classes are small which is great for participation, group work and contact time. The lecturers are very involved through the work of each student. I received excellent support throughout writing my dissertation and made good use of the well-stocked library. The university has strong links with China and a magnificent Chinese library. It is also has a high intake of mature students, international students and takes student wellbeing seriously. Overall, this UWTSD is a decent university, especially if you like quiet, prefer small group seminars to massive lectures with rooms full of people and want close guidance and support.”
