Discover our top 20 university rankings and find out where the best UK university for sports clubs or societies is located.

We crunched the numbers and are thrilled to announce the top 20 best universities for university clubs and societies, according to reviews on StudentCrowd.

What are university societies?

A club or society at university is a group of students who organise events around a common interest. This could be joining a sports team, taking part in a knitting social or going to the pub to discuss political issues. Many groups offer taster sessions at the start of the year, so you don’t need to commit to a club immediately. Student societies are an easy way to meet new people at UK universities, especially if the student population is large and overwhelming. For most students, the clubs and societies they join in their early years at university form an important part of their university experience!

The Students’ Union is the hub for student experience and it will provide financial support for clubs every year. At the start of each academic year, they will host a freshers fair where students can speak to society members and find out more. Most students recommend joining at least one society while at uni, because they are a great way to make new friends and socialise! The best societies to join at uni will depend on your interests and how you want to spend your time as a student.

If you are looking for endless options, the University of Birmingham (#2) has over 500+ clubs and societies to choose from, including ‘Pasta Society’ and ‘CraftSoc’. Or why not join a sports club? Loughborough University (#11) has everything from American Football to Wheelchair Basketball. There really is something for everyone!

How was this top 20 award-winning list created?

To calculate this league table, we analysed 24,041 authentic student reviews written on StudentCrowd between June 2021 and May 2023. We used this rating across all universities in the UK to showcase the BEST 20 according to students.
