I really love my teachers in the modern languages department and would recommend them to anyone. My French teacher specifically has taken me from complete beginner to almost C1 level in two years, and I am currently completing an internship in France as a result. The staff really engage with the students and get to know them which I haven't seen so much in other departments. The course content is interesting and what is nice is that it is entirely customisable to your interests as all modules are optional. I am unsure about job prospects for most students but I have secured a summer internship with Deloitte, so anything is possible. My only negative is that my personal tutor has shown no interest in me and was actually quite aggressive when I pressured him for help after he didn't respond for 3 days, but all the other staff have gone above and beyond for me. read more

spanish at newcastle isn’t great in my opinion - the way it’s taught feels entirely ineffective and the seminars feel like a complete waste of time as they’re very badly organised and the prep work is organised even worse so nobody has a clue what to actually do for the seminars. the japanese staff and course along with the staff on optional modules are great however. read more
