I genuinely have tons of amazing memories while doing my undergraduate studies here at Lancaster University, as my department (Politics, Philosophy and Religion) is very supportive of me and my peers. Most of my lecturers and supporting staff members are generally quite considerate if any of the students were to face hiccups in their academic progress, and would strive to assist them in any way possible. read more

History, BA Hons FullTime

I have very mixed feelings about my time studying history at Lancaster. My first year (in lockdown) was very difficult - the main module involves learning a new period / topic every week, which was very hard to keep up with or develop any real interest in the period being studied. In addition, my class tutor in my first year was unhelpful and dismissive of any issues I had with the course, often dismissing my worries rather than providing meaningful advice. However, the course became much better in my second and third years, where I have had the chance to choose specific modules to study and learn from the very knowledgeable professors at Lancaster. My dissertation supervisor is wonderful and a great help to my studies. read more

The department are much friendlier than LEC and provide lots of support. They speak with students and act upon feedback. There are different modules to choose from so you can tailor your degree to your interests... but there sometimes the module information is a bit misleading as to what the course is actually like. I wish there were more contact hours, too. read more

Teaching quality is excellent and course content is generally good, although with staffing changes and core modules there are some pointless and dull topics. Teaching time on many courses is low but lecturers are willing to accommodate more sessions. Biggest issue was needing to take non BA specific modules in first year to meet the full credits as there are not a full year's worth of 1st year modules on offer read more

On this course, I had amazing lecturers in both departments! They were always willing to answer questions in lectures and outside, in their office hours. Tutors would spend time with you, to help you understand your work if you came to their office hours and overall, I found the staff to be very helpful, answering emails promptly. Teaching quality was good, however, sometimes I feel that more could be put online to help you understand the topic, in the form of notes. However, there is always something there to help you, like recordings of lectures. I just find that notes help me more. Particularly, this year, the course didn't seem like value for money as we were still paying money to the university during strikes, which lasted a month or so. read more

It does often feel like I am paying £9,250/year for a Library membership and a few powerpoints each week. An increase in contact hours would be brilliant, if only to just double the seminar time; as it stands, seminars are so time stretched that there is often not enough time to actually go through and talk about everything that needs discussing with a member of staff present. The teaching is generally very good; the lecturers are engaging and interested in their subject areas and clearly take their role seriously; it's not just a job to support their research. That said, we do have many highly intelligent lecturers including the one and only Chris Macleod, expert on JS Mill. The courses are generally well constructed, with the notable exception of HIST100 (the Introduction to History). It does get a lot better in later years however. Generally speaking, there is a wide variety of interesting subjects that one can pursue in your quest for knowledge, whatever your interests. read more
