The most wrongly hated halls in my opinion - only been at Nevern for about a month this far but we've had so little problems. The money you save from living will fund any transport issues you may have (maybe about 6/7 quid for a night out). Ethernet connection great, being so far also means everyone is insanely social. Had a few issues but they were sorted quickly. Don't be too quick to rule out these halls. Shared bathrooms also isn't a problem at all considering you literally live together and your boundaries will completely drop after a few days. Despite being so far out, you're in the nicest part of the city imo - Roath Park is gorgeous, Pen-y-lan is a very safe area. The 52 runs until midnight going into centre. Just don't worry if you get put here.

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Overall experience is fine but the location is very far from everything and security guards aren't available all the time.
Small room, but big enough for me. Wi-Fi doesn’t seem to work well for streaming movies/shows. Couple faulty appliances but maintenance usually comes within 2 week. Adequate cork board. Bathroom small and doesn’t drain water very well. Heating faulty
Was too far away from the university, and although there is a bus service this was only Monday to Friday and finished at 5. It is around an hour walk into the centre, and 40 mins away from the uni. Apart from that it was ok and the accommodations were nice enough- apart from Nevern and Tower.
University halls is a safe and quiet place to live, I enjoyed living here as you did not have the disturbance or noise you find at places such as Talybont. I was lucky enough to have an ensuite in my bedroom, overall my room was nice and Tower building (where I lived) has nice refurbished kitchens and rooms with good views. The main issue with university halls is that it is about a 45 - 1hr walk to campus. There is an hourly University bus provided but it tends to arrive late for lectures or you miss it coming out of lectures so you have to wait, which is ok if you have some studying to do. Finally, it ends up being expensive living at university halls as it is easier to have your food delivered to do big shops which can cost extra, as well as Ubers to and from nights out as the public buses are unreliable and the university bus has ended at 6:20 gets incredibly costly averaging £20 an Uber one way.
I didn't apply for these halls but was placed here cause I applied late- I was nervous to stay cause of such bad reviews but honestly it's not that bad and I really enjoyed living here, so don't panic if you get out here too. The worst part of living here is the location but the free bus runs hourly during the week and no.52 bus just opposite main gate goes straight into the city for weekends so I really had no bother travelling. The area is really lovely, so close to the Roath park and is generally really quiet and safe being in a residential area. Also great view of city being on top of hill. I didn't have too many issues but were sorted pretty quickly and cleaning staff are lovely. Would recommend having a mattress topper
I would not recommend university halls if you can avoid it. Considering it's location and facilities it's not worth the money. I was in coachmans and the room was very small, just enough space to walk between the bed and desk, I visited friends with bigger room and closer to uni who payed the same money. Whilst there is a bus service, it only runs weekdays so doesn't help if you want to go out. It's built up to be quite social but I found that it was quite lifeless and not much went on. My flat in particular was very antisocial. I also found that I had alot of issues. My toilet kept leaking, my flusher didn't work and when I went to get it fixed it still didn't work properly and the oven didn't work for over a week. If you are more quite and like not going out it may be better suited to you but I personally did not enjoy it and think it's bad value for money. Also any big super market is half an hour walk away.
Perhaps again I could have enjoyed university halls more had I been in a better mental state. But, I managed to make some good friends, internet was good, the kitchen was kept relatively clean. Be ready for a long walk if you don’t catch the bus. No Supermarkets close if you don’t have a car either. There are express/convenient stores but who wants to pay a fortune.

Absolutely awful experience. So many issues I can't even begin to go into them, we've had multiple days without any hot water without a date for repair. Miles away from anywhere (nearest supermarket is 20 mins walk, which is mostly one giant hill). Do not move here. Go private
uni halls gets a lot of bad press because it's quite far away from the city centre but it is one of the most social halls of residence and there's a great atmosphere. a free bus is provided for residents as well to get to and from lectures so you don't have to walk. there are open green spaces and basketball courts that are free to use as well as a social lounge space which is good for studying.
I stayed in Garden Wing with 12 other people, we shared 2 kitchens and 3 showers and 4 toilets. The main problem was the distance from the main campus but there is a free uni bus on weekdays from 8:30-5:30 going every hour. But on weekends you need to either walk or get a public bus, definitely recommend getting a Student bus pass to get 1/3 off. My flatmates were great and made the whole situation much better. Rooms are very good size with big window, has a single bed, I recommend getting a mattress topper to make it more comfortable, also bring a bed side table!
Nevern. The rest of uni halls is nice.
rooms damp and mouldy but the pres are like none other
Yeah, you're going to want to avoid this one if you can. Really far away from campus. There's a free bus that takes you down to campus, but it only runs once an hour and is not available on weekends. Going downtown at night, especially on weekends, can be a hassle. The internet constantly lags and will throw you offline at random parts of the day. Hope they get a night and weekend bus for students, but until then it is in your best interest not to go here.
I lived in Ty Gywn and it was so great! At first, I was gutted due to the distance, location and the shared bathrooms but I couldn't have been luckier! We get a free bus to uni which is soo helpful and considering the fact that Taly is 25-30 minute walk anyway we haven't really drawn the short straw. On top of that, the distance makes us so much more social! Not only did we make friends in the flat but in other blocks too. Plus when it got hotter we all sat on the common grassy areas and hung out there. It was such a good uni experience and I've had the best time. Most of uni halls were clearing as well so we all had the same attitude. The only con is truly the distance and it was frustrating during weekends or if we wanted to go into town but that's all. 10/10 people and experience.
Quite a distance from main campus but a shuttle bus was available.
I stay in the tower block of university halls. I can't say anything about the view from the tower since I'm staying on a low-lying floor. My ensuite room is pretty decent and spacious when compared to places such as Colum Hall. I really love my room, the sole downside is the location of Uni Halls itself. It's on a small hill, so prepare for a 15 min hike plus 30min walk if you plan to walk back! There is a public bus that goes to the city, but accumulate that and transport is gonna cost 20% of your monthly expenditure. There are two kitchens for 9 people to share in my flat. I would say the structure of the kitchen and dining area is rather poor as it is hard to get around when everyone in the flat is out to cook dinner at the same time! The nearest grocery store is 20mins away which isn't too bad, but I doubt you'll be saying that when you have to carry your groceries up the hill. Though you could always shop at Lidl and catch the bus provided by the university near campus.
Room size good. Space under the bed for pullout drawers. Need topper mattress as metal bed and mattress provided is poor. Sink with a mirror in the bedroom, cupboard below it and above it. The wardrobe good size, cupboards above them too. Wifi not the best. Heating good. Having to share a bathroom isn't that bad, haven't had to wait to use the shower yet! Kitchen good size but only one sink and oven between 12 students. There are three fridge freezers which is difficult, there should be four. The cupboard storage space is dreadful. There is a table that can fit 8 chairs around it but the flat is designed for 12!!!! Kitchen badly designed, so there is a lot of mess because of this. Nobody goes to the social lounge, its a waste of space. Everybody socialises in their kitchens. Worse thing is the distance from the uni, and free bus starts too late for 9am exams in the morning, so have a 40min walk and nothing if you have lecture finishing after 6pm. This makes the halls dreadful

The one redeeming quality of University Hall is the people - because you're so far away from the city, everyone has to get on to be able to get taxis there and back. The price is the same as other, far better residences yet in University Hall it's very difficult to see how they can justify charging you this much. The cleaners are terrible - they come in at around 9 in the morning and do sod all, just talk loudly on the phone, bash the Hoover against your door, and leave notes threatening you with fines for not doing jobs they're meant to (e.g. cleaning the hobs). The kitchens in Nevern are ridiculously small - it's a struggle for two people cooking at the same time, yet 11 people are meant to share the space, plus there's no where near enough storage for everyone. The free bus is infrequent and doesn't even run on weekends, and the management is dire - they're rude, patronising and inconsiderate, and because they don't work on Saturdays, the post is a nightmare to get.
It may be far away but this campus/halls is in a quiet area with local shops that are always stocked just 10 minutes away. A quick 7 pound taxi into town and you can enjoy all the nightlife Cardiff has to offer. A warm community feel to this campus you won't get anywhere else! Plus a great bus service through the week means no walking to uni!
A nice amount of people, brilliant kitchen and room space. Its a shame its far away from the centre, but the free bus and public transport availability makes up for it
Uni hall is mainly a place for second choose unis but it is extremely socialable so isn't as bad is it seems but the buses are a pain but you basically get what you pay for
The flats in the Tower building are great, especially for the price you pay but the distance from the halls to the Cathays Campus is a pain despite the free bus which leaves every hour until 5.30pm.
feels like a prison but the pre drinks are lit
It's decent as long as you get good people.
These halls are just under three miles from the city centre - this causes slight inconvenience but CU runs a bus service every hour until 6 and taxi's cost around £6 one-way. Hall management are good within the opening hours. After 5pm if there is a maintenance problem you are expected to call security - who NEVER respond and just passes the problem onto hall management to deal with the next day. This is a nuisance, especially - for example - when the lights trip and you're plunged into darkness for 12 hours. I live in Birchwood which offers large rooms, with communal hygiene facilities. The scale of the accommodation, and the many locked firedoors between flats limits social interaction outside your own flat. Despite it's many disappointments, Uni Halls is value for money, offering car parking and a social area with sporting facilities on the grounds. The wi-fi very rarely goes down, and is very quick.
Location is terrible, no where near town/uni/hospital Only plus is the view from tower block
Location is terrible, cleaners don't actually clean unless it's clean, toilet blocks all the time, too expensive for what it is
Pretty good halls although the location is very far from the main campus which can often make transport rather difficult
A nice place, shame it's so far away though! They have a bus service which is quite good (could be more frequent) and you must be prepared to spend money on a taxi after a night out. That said, taxis are fairly cheap in Cardiff.
Although location isn't the best at all; no close by shops and far from SU and sports centre, I'm very happy here. Have a nice, spacious room and really nice flatmates. Sense of community is strong too.
Miles away but its nice when u get there
Horrible, very far from the University and the city center, had a bus but only on week days and the last one was at 6. Nothing in the room was working, had a broken light and sink for months till it got fixed. There was not enough cupboards for 10 people. Rooms were dirty when first moving in. Damp in rooms and in some the heating did not work. Rooms were ugly, walls were just brick and beds were uncomfortable, especially for the amount paid. Other students paid the same amount in University Halls but where in better, more modern buildings.
Want a social life don't come to these halls. Most people have a personality of a foot.
Nevern, not much to look at on the outside, or even on the inside. But, you will have a laugh there. Other residences have around half of the number in one flat here (11), so this can be something you that will make you love or hate Nevern. Think of it this way, with 10 others in the flat, you're chances of making a friend are increased! The major upside to this residence is that it is cheap, very cheap in comparison to other accommodations. Major downside is that is it a decent 40 minute walk to and from the main campus building. The bus getting back from campus as well is a bit of a nightmare. Also, the cleaner is fairly useless, so be prepared to do some cleaning.
The free bus is great. Location not so much and no one uses the common room.
Location lets this otherwise lovely halls down, really nice area but 40 minute walk to town and free bus service doesn't run often enough. (once every hour 8.30-5.30 mon-fri) but really social because it's excluded from other halls so more people are closer with all of their building. Not all blocks are en-suite but wifi is good. no tv and self catering in ok kitchens
Being in the Tower i have a great quality room and a top view over the city, for value for money i would say I'm on par with Tally Court. the rest of uni halls is good quality (nevern being below par id argue) and would be ideal if they weren't so far away from all other cardiff uni students...its closer to Cardiff met! the location really does ruin all of the good and commendable aspects of Uni Halls. Cardiff uni should get rid of uni halls and keep all freshers in one area.... the uni experience shouldn't involve a commute everyday/nigh out. Also a bar is advertised which makes the distance from anything else more bearable in mind... yet there isn't actually bar... and management won't allow you to drink in the lounge, which is really nice, yet never used because people can't enjoy a couple of drinks over a game of pool.. If you're coming to cardiff uni and need advice on halls, unless you enjoy being out of town and away from all the action, apply to tally
The location is grim. My recommendation would be to kill it with fire.
