Creative Writing, BA Hons FullTime

I only have about 6 hours of classes a week. The course does not offer enough creative writing courses. I am studying Creative Writing as a degree on its own, yet, I have only been able to have 50% of creative modules during my 1st and 2nd year. In third year I cannot choose the writing disciplines that I am interested in because the university does not offer enough choice. They say this is because there aren't enough teachers, but I am paying as much as any other student and different departments have more choices and teachers. If the university is unable to provide a full creative writing degree then they should not be allowed to offer it. However, teachers are pretty great at the university and more often than not keep any topic interesting and are more than willing to help when asked. read more

Having a personal tutor who doesn't respond is, in all honesty, not the best. Having a lecturer whose voice and lecture content puts me to sleep (even with caffiene) is also not fabulous. Oh, and the fact that I got the exact same feedback as someone else was also rather s***. (possibly a computing error??) But other than those two lecturers the course is pretty great. read more

Aber's English department is one of the top in the world. Despite this, I wish I had done a different degree for the sake of employability. There is little to no guidance about writing professionally. That said, my writing skills have vastly improved over the last 2 1/2 years, as have my critical thinking and research skills. The department can sometimes be disorganised, but some changes have been made in the past year which have improved things. The lecturers are usually passionate about their subject, but sometimes focus a bit too much on their pet topics. Although my personal tutor switched this year, both were available when needed, and quick to respond to emails. Overall, I would recommend the department, but don't make my mistake and go in expecting career guidance. read more

The teaching quality is good, although for the money more contact hours would have been nice. Same with my personal tutor. The course is really interesting, and they give a lot of support on looking for jobs/ post grad study. read more
