Newport Student Life
Newport is a market town in Shropshire (not to be confused with the city in Wales!). If you are thinking of studying near Newport its safe to say that you’re the kind of person that quite enjoys being in the middle of rural nowhere.
Cost of Living
Accommodation
Student accommodation costs range from £90 - £167 per week; the average is £138 per week.
Compare the average elsewhere: Manchester: £171/week, Birmingham: £173/week, London: £287/week.
(Prices are for all purpose-built student accommodation (both private and university-owned) over the last 12 months, as listed on StudentCrowd)
Harper Adams University has put together a helpful table of living costs comparing Harper Adams to Birmingham. It will give you a good idea of how much expenses such as rent, food and travel will cost. Check it out here.
Nights Out
For a town of its size, it has a surprisingly good nightlife, mostly encouraged by the presence of the students and pubs offering everything from sports games to quiet corners. Most of this is centred around the wide high street so it’s easy to find. You’ll also find yourself at the Student' Union Main Bar for nights out, especially Wednesday nights which are always the big night out and are often fancy dress themed.
Public Transport
There is a local bus service and buses go from Telford to Newport, and then from Newport to the Edgmon campus. There are also free shuttle buses during term time and if you like to cycle it’s a great location to have a bike.
Eating Out
Harper Adams is a well-catered campus university with an abundance of restaurants, cafes and a pub, making eating out very easy! When you are keen for a change, Newport has a range of pubs, bistros, tea rooms and lots more to try. Some do student deals like Indian restaurant Taste of Paradise where students can get a 4-course meal for just £7.95 on Mondays!
Shopping
Newport has a distinctively wide main street which is home to independent and high street shops, picturesque cobbled streets, a wide range of cafes and restaurants, supermarkets and utilities. Slightly further away is Telford, which covers any serious retail therapy needs. The shopping centre has over 150 different shops so you’ll be sure to find what you need there.

Days Out
There’s a lot of old stately homes in the area, many with large grounds and seasonal events held all through the year like the beautiful Attingham Park. Treat yourself to a posh scone while you’re there.
One of England’s biggest cities is only an hour away with its massive shopping area and multiple big venues for concerts and theatre shows, so you’ve really got no excuse to make the most of all it has to offer.
As you head east towards Stafford you’ll quickly find yourself getting into the Peaks, with opportunities to go walking, boating, maybe even something nutty like hang gliding.
Classified as a World Heritage Site since 1986, the area made a unique contribution to the industrial revolution in the 18th Century. Now you can cycle, canoe or walk to enjoy the stunning scenery of the Ironbridge Gorge.

I lived at home and commuted. Newport is a dead city that's mostly declining, so you have to go to Cardiff if you want anything. It has good transport links. They could be better. It's a quiet city though, so good for anyone who enjoys a quiet life away from a busy city like Cardiff. read more

Newport is okay, it is a small market town, Telford is much better for shopping and nights out with a lot more things to do there. There is a minibus to and from campus from Newport. There is places to eat out and there is one night club, there are Harper nights where it is cheaper to get in and there are a lot of student prices around the town too. read more

Newport is a little town with the larger Telford nearby. There are regular buses and I think the prices are decent, especially in comparison to if you lived in a city uni. There's lots of pubs and one main club in Newport, so the nightlife isn't like being in a city but on the student nights out it always gets super busy and social. read more

Newport is a relatively small town with a few basic shops to buy essential at, although there is a public bus which you can take to the Telford station and town centre.
