Gloucester Student Life
Students enjoy living in the beautiful city of Gloucester, which is close enough to the Cotswolds to feel like you’re almost in the country, but with no shortage of things to do on days off. There is something for everyone, whether that’s visiting King Edward II’s tomb or experiencing one of the 45 festivals that Gloucester hosts!
Nights Out
If you’re into comedy shows or sports watching or just to catch up with your friends, Café René is the place to be for the classic pub night. There is an extensive list of alcohol and food, they even have their own cider on tap brewed in a brewery nearby!
In central Gloucester, you will find ATIK nightclub. There are themed nights on Fridays and Saturdays, perfect for students who are on a budget, with drinks for only £2.50. There are also student events such as UV paint and dress up parties on Wednesday nights.
Fever Gloucester has two rooms within the club: Fever Room and Boutique Room. Fever Room plays the latest chart and pop music, whereas the Boutique Room is a bit more sophisticated. There are a myriad of offers going on including free entry on selected nights!
Public Transport
Gloucester has good transport links whether by bus, coach or train. There are regular buses from Hartpury campus into Gloucester, Tewkesbury and the local area. Gloucester is on the national rail and National Express coach network which opens up travel to the rest of the UK. Don’t forget to get student discount cards for your travel!
Eating Out
If you’re craving a handmade pizza, Dough from Dough is the place to go! Their dough is handmade 48 hours before serving to ensure the quality is tip top - even the garlic mayo and BBQ sauce is homemade. There are loads of options for vegetarians and vegans as well.
The CoalHouse Inn is the place to go for classy feel-good food, serving braised beef, six bean curry, apple pie and more! They are also known for their baguettes with a large range of toppings. Don’t forget to take in the history of the pub itself…
The Comfy Pew Cafe Bistro is the cafe to be if you decide to catch up on some reading outside the university or have a catch up with your friends. Set beside the Gloucester Cathedral, you can appreciate the architecture whilst enjoying a live band!
Shopping
Located by a historical dock area is Gloucester Quays, a retail outlet mall for brands such as All Saints, Molton Brown, Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger, Adidas and Nike. In the summer, you can also dine or order a pint by the waterside.
Days Out
Visit Mr Mulligan's in nearby Cheltenham for a 36 hole challenge with your friends on your day off. There are three themed routes to mix things up, but you can also play ping pong, pool, electro darts and shuffleboard. Who knew crazy golf can be so competitive?!
You can enjoy a whole day out at JDR Karting and Activity Centre where they have go karting, laser tag, axe throwing and segwaying! You can visit there with your mates during the weekend or convince your family to go whilst they’re visiting.
If you enjoy Harry Potter and history, the Gloucester Cathedral will be right up your street. Some bits of Harry Potter were filmed there and you will also find King Edward II’s tomb, which is one of only a few royal tombs to be found outside London. Plan a visit to appreciate the rich history of the cathedral!

Rent in the area...
Rent in the area is highly variable but typically lower quality than in other regions, with the university's list of "approved" landlords being a who's who of dodgy characters. Eating out is acceptable with some nice places in the Quays, but nothing exceptional. Nights out? It's hardly the best around, with cheap dives aplenty but hardly anywhere you'd take a date. Shopping is quite nice with a wide range of cheaper, mid-range and some upper market stores available, so you should find what you're looking for. Public transport is quite good if you want to go around Gloucester. Awful if you ever want to leave. read more
